Steel Cloud (Los Angeles West Coast Gateway):
LOACTION: Los Angeles, California
SIZE: 1,600 ft (length)
DATE: 1989
In 1989 Asymptote was awarded First Prize in the international competition to design the Los Angeles West Coast Gateway, a monument to celebrate Pacific Rim immigration to the United States. The Steel Cloud is designed to occupy a zone directly above the median strip of the Hollywood Freeway, and the structure is an architectural assemblage of situations and spectacle where scale is purposefully disconcerting. It is a living monument, accommodating galleries, libraries, theaters, cinemas, parks and plazas intersected by the fluid, transient spaces of the city.
